Eighth-ranked Trojans blank Hawks in baseball
JEWELL — Compared to their first meeting, which saw both the No. 8-ranked (Class 2A) West Marshall and the South Hamilton baseball team battle down to the wire, the second meeting was all Trojans.
In a Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference matchup held this past Monday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex, the Hawks were dealt with a 7-0 setback against West Marshall on Senior Night.
With their third loss in five games, South High fell to 3-8 within the HOIAC and 8-12 overall. The Trojans retained command of the league at 13-1 with a 22-6 overall record.
The Hawks will go back to work at 7:30 p.m. tonight, facing off against HOIAC foe PCM in South High’s regular season finale in Prairie City. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, the Hawks will face Colo-NESCO in a Class 1A-District 3 tournament matchup at Duane Newton Field in Zearing.
While no offensive stats from the Hawks in their game against West Marshall were available as of press time, sophomore Landon Sogard struck out five batters over the course of five innings. Senior Landon Grove dished up three strikeouts in two frames.
West Marshall pitcher Owen Siegert recorded 16 strikeouts while allowing two hits in a complete game.
