DES MOINES — Justin Callahan placed his name all over the Webster City boys track and field history books during his career.
On Saturday during the Class 3A state championship meet inside Drake Stadium, Callahan competed one final time for the Lynx.
The Simpson College commit anchored the sprint medley relay to a ninth-place finish to go along with his pair of sevenths from earlier in the meet.
Running with Callahan were classmate Jaxon Griffith, junior Kaleb Hansen and sophomore Rylan Stroner, as the quartet went 1:33.13.
“We had a great group of kids this year that worked hard and did all we asked,” WCHS boys head coach Chad Hisler said. “Justin was part of all three of those records that were set, including one that was 57 years old (the 400). And he broke it multiple times.”
Callahan was seventh in both the 400 and 400 hurdles, ending his individual high school track career with medals. He ran 49.59 last Thursday in the open 400, capturing his heat.
In the 400 hurdles, he went 54.33, just missing breaking his own school record. He also holds the school mark in the open 400. He improved four spots from his junior season in the 400 where he placed 11th and six spots in the 400 hurdles.
Callahan ran the anchor leg on the 4×400, which placed 13th in the prelims in 3:25.28. Stroner, Daniel Murillo-Delfin and Hansen joined him.
“Rylan had a great state meet running 49 (seconds) on both relays and had a super 200 split on the med,” Hisler said. “Jaxon and Kaleb managed playing in multiple baseball games and ran great at state. Daniel Murillo-Delfin did a great job in his first state meet. He can have a special career with hard work.
“We had a lot of kids work hard this year and it was a great season.”
Griffith ran a personal best in the 110 hurdle prelims, going 15.37 to place 15th.
The distance medley relay of Griffith, Hansen, Stroner and Murillo-Delfin placed 17th in 3:38.14.
