HAMPTON — Behind a dominating performance in all areas, the Webster City football team snapped a two-game losing skid here Friday night, besting Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 35-6.

The Lynx raced out to a 28-0 lead at the half thanks to three second-quarter touchdowns.

Junior Cael Nixon ran 17 times for 138 yards with a score, senior Jaxon Cherry added 110 yards and three touchdowns, and senior Keegan Hisler rushed for 101 yards and tossed a 36-yard TD to 11th-grader Luke Estlund.

Hisler finished 3-for-5 for 51 yards, completing passes to both Briar Klaver and Jaxon Griffith.

“We had a good week of practice and had no procedure penalties or miscues in the backfield against Hampton-Dumont/CAL,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said. “We came out ready to play on the first possession and went 70 yards for the opening score, got the ball back and immediately went down the field and scored again to go up 14-0 early.”

Just like on offense, Nixon and Cherry anchored the defense as both recorded a sack. Cherry and Jayden Weinzetl had 6.5 tackles apiece while Aiden Hrnicek had 5.5 with Klaver and Trevyn Lyons each making five stops.

“Coach Brim called a great game on defense, keeping their offense off balance with movement and stunts with the front,” Howard said. “A key was the play of Jayden Weinzetl and Keegan Hisler coming off the ends. Their speed and strength definitely helped contain their quarterback running game and pressured the pass, with Hisler batting down three passes.

“Cherry and Nixon played very well at linebacker and Estlund, Hrnicek, Lyons, and Klaver defended the pass and tackled well in the secondary.”

As a team, Webster City had 11 tackles for loss against the Bulldogs, holding them to 115 yards passing and 76 yards rushing. Gavin Meader completed just 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards and ran eight times for 12 yards.

Brody Walton had the lone Hampton-Dumont/CAL touchdown, rushing for 46 yards. The Bulldogs two in a row in district play to North Central Conference rivals after starting the year 4-0 with wins over Nevada and West Marshall.

The Lynx got their first district win after falling to Clear Lake last week. They will look to make it two in a row when they take on Charles City on the road Friday night.

“We still have a ways to go to be more consistent up front, but the offensive line with Sinclair at center, Lahr and Griffin at guards, and Youngdale and Nohrenberg at tackles came off the ball better this week, against a big, stacked defensive front,” Howard said. “Aiden Moothart continues to improve at tight end and Jesse Crutcher had some key blocks from split end. We worked hard this week on the counter and Nixon and Estlund had several good runs on that play.”
