In his final contest at Lynx Field at Webster City, senior Cael Nixon made it a special night for his classmates on Homecoming.

The Lynx running back had a monster effort as the Lynx (3-4 overall, 2-1 in Class 3A, District 2) doubled up Charles City (3-4, 0-3) by a final of 42-21 for their second consecutive victory.

Nixon ran the ball 34 times for a career-high 275 yards and four touchdowns. He had a long score of 65 yards.

“Cael has consistently gotten better the more game experience he has been able to have,” said WCHS head coach Andy Brim. “He has done a really nice job lately being patient and picking his spots. Then, when he does decide to get north and south, he is able to change directions in one step.”

Jaxon Griffith (121 yards) and Aiden Hrnicek (74 yards) also reached paydirt and had strong efforts to anchor a relentless rushing attack. Griffith had a 20-yard scamper to the end zone, and Hrnicek scored from three yards out.

The Lynx ran for 468 yards.

“Jaxon and Aiden also had great nights running the ball, which means our offensive line did their part up front,” Brim said. “They have continued to improve each night out. They take their jobs very seriously.”

Hrnicek led the defense with 7.5 tackles. Gavin Wynkoop, Griffith and Jayden Weinzetl had six tackles each.

Griffin and Coyce Bertran recorded interceptions.

“We had a great defensive effort,” Brim said. “We had a couple of new guys in the line up and some guys in different spots. I was very pleased with how everyone adapted and the effort they played with.”

For Charles City Deacon Caspers carried the ball 26 times for 148 yards and a touchdown. His longest score was from 22 yards.

Josh Bruening returned a kickoff 94 yards for a score.

Webster City led only 14-8 at halftime, and the decision was still in doubt heading into the fourth quarter. The Lynx then pulled away with a pair of fourth-quarter scores.

Webstetr City now closes the regular season with two of the top 3A opponents in the state. The Lynx head to No. 5 Algona — last week’s top-ranked squad — and finish on the road at second-rated Humboldt.

“Algona is a great football team,” Brim said. “We have played one of the toughest schedules in 3A, so hopefully, that will have us prepared (for this stretch).

“It’s also a NCC school, so the kids are all familiar with each other. That adds to how competitive it will be.”

Starting at $3.46/week.
