Another win for Webster City girls tennis
SAYDEL — Before the elements went icky this past weekend, the Webster City girls’ tennis team chalked up another notch in the win column.
Despite splitting their singles matches, the Lynx dominated in doubles to handle an experienced Saydel squad via an 8-3 decision last Thursday on the campus of Saydel High School.
After achieving the clean sweep in doubles, senior Trinity Griffth, junior Kinzey Koestner and Izzy Feldhaus collected wins in singles competition.
“I’m really proud of the way the girls got out to a fast start,” said Mark Fisher, WCHS girls’ tennis coach. “I was a bit nervous going into the match, with Saydel having their whole lineup returning from last year, and two extremely solid players up top. We dominated a couple from start to finish, started slow in a few but finished strong, but overall showed out decisively as the better doubles teams. It really set a tone and put the meet away early.”
With their second straight victory, the Lynx improved to 5-4 overall. The Eagles dipped down to the .500 mark at 3-3.
Webster City was initially scheduled to take part in the Waverly-Shell Rock Girls Tennis Tournament, before inclement weather last Friday canceled the meet.
The Lynx are able to take a little bit of a breather, before traveling south and east to play Ballard on Friday on the campus of Ballard High School in Huxley.
“With so much tennis in the past two weeks with little practice, I think our girls were starting to wear down a bit,” Fisher said. “However, they have continued to show improvement. We’ll look forward to the stretch run when things space out a little more and we can fine tune stuff headed to tournament time.”
Griffith and senior Joslin Gourley got things going for the purple and gold, defeating Grace Peck and Jenna Schnell in an 8-5 result. Koestner and Felhaus teamed up, taking an 8-5 match over Alyssa Neddermeyer and Josie Rhodes.
Freshman Allie Severe and junior Addie Tesdahl went over Sami Nicolet and Madison Rogers in an 8-3 matchup, before sophomore Cyra Christensen and senior Katjia Cortes scored an 8-1 win over Jayden Brown and Jaden Tennant.
Sophomore pair Karina Murray and Perla Torres completed the sweep, beating Alivia Brooks and Malia Whisler with an 8-2 decision.
“It was good to see (Cortes, Murray and Torres) not only get the chance to contribute with the varsity team, but also get their first career wins,” Fisher said. “(Cortes) has been such a hard working positive member of this team. (Murray and Torres) have worked so hard already, since they were in eighth grade. They have developed and come so far, with bright futures ahead of them.”
While Gourley took a tough 8-1 loss against Peck in singles, Griffith acquired an 8-1 win over Schnell.
“(Griffith) played extremely well against a very solid singles player,” Fisher said. “That was a match, I thought, where we might struggle a bit. However, (Griffith) absolutely dominated it, from start to finish. It’s been so fun watching her evolve these past two years.”
Severe fell in an 8-2 game against Neddermeyer, before Koestner took a hard fought 8-6 win over Rhodes.
Christensen fell to Nicolet in an 8-2 match, before Felhaus grabbed an 8-5 win over Rogers.
“(Feldhaus) had her first big test at six,” said Fisher. “She was basically playing against her mirror image. Both were lefties, with the same build and style of play. It was a fun match to watch, and it definitely tested her. It was great to see her dig deep and play better on the big points.”
