Hayden McCoy drove in Morgan Tempel to give the Webster City softball team a thrilling 2-1 victory in eight innings over Storm Lake here Tuesday night.
The Lynx (2-2 overall) bounced back after a loss to Humboldt Monday in North Central Conference action.
Briley VanDeer allowed just four hits and struck out four, adding a triple at the plate. She was 2-for-3 on the night.
Tempel, who had a triple, reached on an error and stole second base in the eighth inning before coming around to score on a line drive hit by McCoy to the outfield.
Tempel also drove in a run, as Haydin Sealine, Amanda Lahr, Jaylyn Bahrenfuss and Izzy Weinschenk each added a hit for Webster City. Bahrenfuss, Tempel and Aliva Burns all stole a base.
“We started the game with a different kind of energy,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “The kids really fed off of each other starting in the first inning with them going down in order and then Alivia Burns getting on right away and scoring. Briley pitched a heck of a game.
“Going into, we weren’t sure how many innings she could go dealing with a little wrist issue, but she gutted it out. She gave up a deep shot in the second, but I think it just locked her in even further. I think the biggest reason we played so well is because of the terrible feeling from the night before.
“They stepped up in a big way and turned things back in the right direction.”
Storm Lake entered the contest having won three straight over Spirit Lake, OABCIG and Sioux Central after a 13-9 loss to No. 7 (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda.
The Lynx played at Clear Lake Wednesday night and return home to host eighth-ranked (1A) St. Edmond on Friday.
