LEMARS — The Webster City football team continues to dominate when it comes to district play.

After running through the Class 4A league unbeaten last year, the Lynx improved to 2-0 this season with a commanding 28-7 victory here Friday night over LeMars.

Webster City (4-2 overall, 2-0 in league) was led once again by Jaxon Cherry, as the junior showcased his abilities to the tune of 332 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Cherry got the Lynx rolling with two TD runs in the first quarter, as he finished his night with a third score in the second and another in the third. The standout multi-sport athlete averaged almost 12 yards per carry, finding his way to the end zone on a long run of 76 yards.

“Jaxon has a great God-given ability and he tries to make the most of it with hard work and a humble attitude,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said. “The offensive line really came alive in the fourth quarter with an 11-minute, 90-yard drive with all three backs picking up first downs.

“LeMars ran one play in the quarter.”

Cherry said he “didn’t really have a sense of how many yards I had.”

“I just run until someone stops me,” he said. “I think we are getting in sync on offense.”

CJ Hisler added 60 yards rushing and Ty McKinney had 33, as he needed to attempt just three passes in the game.

On defense, Cherry had 6.5 tackles, with six of them being solo stops. Dylan Burnette-Bingham recorded a sack and both Luke Estlund and Connor Hanson had four tackles each.

Estlund also recovered a fumble and Hisler picked off a pass. The defense held LeMars to 251 yards of total offense, including 105 on the ground.

“The defense had a tough preparation with the LeMars offense,” Howard said. “I thought we played well. They earned the yards they made.”

Webster City will now turn its attention to a showdown with Spencer that will likely determine the district champion. The Tigers are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, and are coming off a win over Fort Dodge.

“We always focus on improving from week to week,” Howard said. “The opponent is always ourselves and our human nature to desire to take it easy.

“We’re now in the same place we were last year, getting ready to play a 5-1 Spencer team. It’ll be a great game against a tough opponent.”

Last year, the Lynx claimed a 21-7 victory over Spencer. They also beat them by the same score in 2020 and earned a win in 2019, 22-20. Back in 2018, the Tigers topped Webster City, 28-14.

After playing back-to-back road games, the Lynx will finish the regular season at home. They host Storm Lake after playing Spencer, and finish the year with Denison-Schleswig.
