SE Warren stuns No. 1 North Linn

Warhawks upset defending Class 2A state champions

As far as Southeast Warren’s Kaylee Bauer is concerned, Kruger Seeds Field is the new home of the Warhawks.

One night after advancing with a win over Remsen-St. Mary’s, No. 6 Southeast Warren shocked defending Class 2A state champion North Linn in a 1A semifinal, 6-2. They will face seventh-ranked Twin Cedars back on this very same field Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers Park for the title.

“That’s our field,” Bauer said. “We were up here last year and came up short (the Warhawks finished third), so we wanted this. We’re ready.”

Bauer was 2-for-4, driving in a run with a double and a single. Emma King had a three-run homer and Alivia Ruble kept the Lynx off balance, striking out seven while allowing just two hits.

“We were confident that we could win,” Bauer said. “At state, every team is good, so anybody can beat anybody. We came in very confident in what we could do.”

North Linn (33-9 overall) won the Class 2A title last year, and was seeking a third crown since 2019 overall. They led 1-0, but surrendered the lead in the second.

Jenna Lemley drove in two runs and Skylar Benesh scored twice.

Southeast Warren (25-4) has eight starters back from last year and has won seven in a row, including a 4-3 win at Twin Cedars in late June.

The program has a long history when it comes to softball in the state, winning four titles in the 1960s.
