READY TO RUN

DES MOINES — The South Hamilton sprinters will take to the blue oval inside Drake Stadium here beginning Friday at the Drake Relays.

Up first will be the Hawk 4×200-meter relay, which runs at 1:01 p.m.

Both the South Hamilton girls and boys qualified in the 4×100-meter relay, with prelims for that event taking place Saturday. Girls run at 9:40 a.m. with the boys to follow.

Kolby Hodnefield, Nick Severseike, Reece Ricke and Ty Koehnk laid down the 18th-fastest time in the state in the 4×200 earlier this year at the Gordy Yuska Relays with a time of 1:29.95.

That mark leads all of Class 2A, just ahead of Spirit Lake and Heart of Iowa Conference rival Monroe-PCM.

Hodnefield, Severseike, Jonathan Drake and Koehnk went 44.03 at an event in Earlham to qualify. They are seeded 51st overall in the event.

In terms of 2A teams, the Hawks are sixth in the 4×100, an event that Spirit Lake leads.

Sydnee Flaugh, Makena Galetich, Ashlyn Erickson and Tanna Thompson went 52.24 in Earlham to secure one of the final spots in the 4×100 field.

The last Drake Relays qualifier for South Hamilton came in 2019 when the 4×800 relay of Logan Peters, Conner Hill, Cole Berg and Quinton Grove placed eighth.

Former Webster City standout Kyle Kepler also returns to the event after leading the Utah women to the team gold last season.
