SPECIAL MEANING

HUMBOLDT — It may be late April, but Friday’s regular season match up for Webster City had a postseason feel.

The fourth-ranked Lynx (9-0 overall) turned in a solid performance to turn back Humboldt North Central Conference foe Humboldt, 2-1.

The victory over the Wildcats (7-1) was the second straight in the series for the Wildcats. Humboldt has won six of the last eight, five by a single goal.

It was the first time Webster City has won at Humboldt since 2019.

“It’s been awhile,” said Webster City head coach Craig Signorin. “2019 was the last victory we’ve taken at Humboldt, so this one is special.”

Junior Eddy Fuentes scored the first goal on an assist from Israel Torres.

“We had an incredible counter off their corner, playing Eddy through,” Signorin said. “They left one man back and Eddy went by him to finish it off. Israel played David at the top of the box and had a great strike on goal (second).

“The goal boxes were messy and it got through to put us up 2 nil.”

Humboldt’s lone goal came from Cristhian Ramirez, his 17th of the season.

The goal allowed was the first by the Lynx since April 19 when No. 8 Aplington-Parkersburg scored twice.

They have recorded six clean sheets on the season and allowed just four goals total.

“Edwin (Nolasco Ramos) made two great saves early and our back line was stellar,” Signorin said. “They didn’t give them anything easy. I was so proud of how well they played.

“I can’t praise (Aiden) Rahe, Abasai (Ramirez), JR and Walfre (Lopez) enough.

Webster City leads the series in the last 25 matches (15-8-1).

Last Thursday, the Lynx took care of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, posting a 9-0 victory. They scored 24 seconds into the match and had five goals in the opening 15 minutes.

“It wasn’t our best warm up but the boys were switched on early,” Signorin said. “With the early goals, it did allow us to give some starters some added rest.

“I thought that everyone that touched the field contributed and played well.”

Fuentes had three goals and an assist, Eric Torres had two goals and an assist, and Cristian Banda Bermudez scored twice. Eduardo Perez and Rahe each had a goal with an assist, while Israel Torres, Villelas and Lopez all had an assist.

Webster City has won four straight over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, posting matching 9-0 wins this season.

The Lynx return to action on Monday when they head to Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
