It was not meant to be for Newell-Fonda here Tuesday night at the state softball tournament.

Miscues in the field during a three-run fifth did in the Mustangs, as Martensdale-St. Mary’s knocked out the defending Class 1A champions, 7-2, at Rogers Park.

The eighth-ranked Blue Devils (25-3 overall) advanced to the semifinals, where they will face No. 7 Twin Cedars on Iowa Central Field.

It was the Mustangs who struck first, as McKenna Sievers drove in Isabel Bartek in the second after Bartek was walked and stole second. M-SM evened it up in the top of the third and Newell-Fonda came right back with a run in the third when Kierra Jungers doubled in Mary Walker.

Walker finished 2-for-3, while Jungers reached base twice. Jungers also struck out nine inside the circle.

“I told the girls to keep their heads up,” Newell-Fonda head coach Courtney Darrow said. “We continued to fight until the very last at-bat when we could have easily given up after they had that big inning.

“Things didn’t go our way. A couple inches here and there was the difference.”

Martensdale-St. Mary’s went ahead in the fourth, scoring two runs on just two hits with a couple walks and an error. In the fifth, they did the same, plating three on one hit, a hit batter and two errors.

Sydney Bears and Angelina Furness each scored twice for the Blue Devils.

Newell-Fonda (35-5) will face third-ranked Lisbon in the consolation game on Dodger Field. Macy Sievers and Anna Bellcock will be their final games in a Mustang uniform.

“We plan on going out and getting a win,” Darrow said. “We owe it to our two seniors and we’ll use it as a way to get us moving toward next season.”
