Klaahsen throws a no-no

No. 1 Central Springs rolls past Mount Ayr to reach semifinals

Cooper Klaahsen didn’t need much from her Central Springs offense here Tuesday afternoon.

But the Panthers definitely delivered for her.

Klaahsen recorded a no-hitter, striking out 12 batters as No. 1 Central Springs (32-1 overall) advanced to the Class 2A semifinals with a 6-0 victory over Mount Ayr on Kruger Seeds Field at Rogers Park.

The Panthers, who finished third a year ago, will face fourth-ranked Iowa City Regina on Iowa Central Field for a spot in the finals.

“I honestly didn’t know until after they announced it,” Klaahsen said. “For me, it was just another game that I was taking one pitch and one inning at a time.”

Ashlyn Hoeft had a two-run homer and Abby Pate also cleared the fences with a solo shot for Central Springs, who has won 18 in a row. That includes six consecutive shutouts, including four postseason games.

Klaahsen, who has allowed just 11 earned runs all year, continued her dominant run. The junior kept the Mount Ayr hitters off balance throughout, with her defense providing some highlight-reel catches in support.

“My defense was great behind me,” Klaahsen said. “They made some incredible plays that you have to have when you throw a no-hitter.”

Pate was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while five other players had a hit. Carly Ryan drove in a pair of runs.

Mount Ayr (17-10) gets Van Meter in a consolation game on Dodger Field. This is the third appearance in the elite eight for the Raiderettes in the past four seasons.
