WEBSTER CITY — One hundred minutes of soccer wasn’t enough for Webster City and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura in the first North Central Conference match of the season Friday night at Lynx Field.
What was left? Penalty kicks, of course.
GHV connected on three of its opportunities in PKs, while WCHS knocked in just one and the Cardinals traveled home with a 3-2 victory over the Lynx.
“We played well enough to win,” WCHS head coach Chad Vogelbacher said after a tough first week that included three matches in four days. “(The) defense played really well,”
GHV (1-0, 1-0 NCC), which is a part of the league in soccer only, piled up 14 more shots on goal, 21-7, but found itself behind for a short period in the second half before it was able to force overtime.

The two teams went scoreless in each of the two 10-minute overtime periods prior to PKs.
Ali Hess scored both of the Cardinals’ goals. She slid a shot past WCHS goalkeeper Maddie Pulis in the 11th minute to give GHV a 1-0 lead, but the Lynx tied the match just before the half courtesy of a Jillian Symens goal that came off an assist from Kendyl Daniels.
Symens scored again, this time unassisted, in the 47th minute to give WCHS its first lead of the season, 2-1. But Hess drew the Cardinals even at 2 with her second goal just seven minutes later.
Abby Gallentine was the only Lynx player to find the back of the net during PKs.
Pulis made 18 saves in net for WCHS (0-3, 0-1 NCC), which will be back on the pitch today at Humboldt. The 5 p.m. kickoff will be the Lynx first road match of the season.
