Lynx pile up pins, points; deck IF-A, Algona

ALGONA – An impressive start to the season is what the Webster City wrestling team wanted here last night, and the 14 guys in the lineup went out and delivered.

Overwhelming advantages in pretty much ever statistical category carried the Lynx to dominant North Central Conference dual victories over Iowa Falls-Alden, 58-15, and Algona, 61-12.

WCHS won 22 of the 27 matches, 14 of them by fall, and picked up one win via forfeit. Not bad for the first excursion outside the practice room.

“It was just nice to wrestle somebody besides ourselves because I think the kids were getting frustrated in practice wrestling the same guys over and over again,” WCHS coach Chad Hisler said. “This is a stepping stone to what we’re looking to do this year, and we saw some things we have to improve on.”

Both duals were mismatches. WCHS went 11-3 against Iowa Falls-Alden and 12-2 against Algona; the Lynx owned a 50-12 advantage in bonus points and a 43-12 edge in takedowns.

All 14 Lynx grapplers earned at least one victory. Nine of them – Drake Doolittle (113 pounds), Cole Nokes (126), Luke Rohmiller (132), Gage Sadler (138), Carter Rholl (145), Zane Williams (152), Ryan Ferrari (160), top-ranked (Class 2A) Gavin Dinsdale (220) and No. 4-ranked Cooper Lawson (285) – went 2-0.

Hisler was particularly pleased that his five seniors collected 10 wins. Sadler and Rholl decked both of their foes. Dinsdale collected a fall and the night’s only forfeit, Nokes claimed a technical fall and fall, and Ferrari picked up one pin and a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Algona’s Tomah Leamah on a takedown late in the third period.

“All of the seniors did a good job,” Hisler said. “You can tell we’ve got a lot of guys that worked hard in the offseason. Nokes looked really good and Rholl – I’m not sure he even wrestled a varsity match last year – looked good, too.”

Doolittle, a freshman, flattened both of his opponents, as did Williams, a sophomore. Lawson, another sophomore in the lineup, picked up a major decision and fall.

Putting together 1-1 nights were Trey Nelson (103), Carson Hartnett (120), Hunter Hayes (170/182), Caleb Olson (170/182) and Rocco Miller (195).

Hartnett dropped a 7-0 decision to fifth-ranked (2A) Dante Tacchia of Iowa Falls-Alden, but regrouped and stuck Algona’s Alex Bronson in 22 seconds.

Competing at the high school level for the first time, Hayes earned a 15-8 decision win over IF-A’s Riley McWherter. Olson, the second freshman in the lineup, blanked Algona’s Trevor Devine, 8-0.

The bonus points accrued were an important element of the team’s performance, Hisler said.

“We always want to look for the fall, so to get 14 of them is a great way to start out,” he said. “As soon as they got takedowns they were looking for falls and that’s what you want to see.”

WCHS will head to its first tournament of the season on Saturday when it takes part in the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invitational. Wrestling will get underway in Grimes at 10 a.m.
