Comets serve and volley way past Lynx

WEBSTER CITY – North Polk dominated singles and cruised to a girls’ tennis dual-meet victory over Webster City Friday afternoon at the WCHS courts.

Backed by five wins in six singles bouts, the Comets won two of three doubles contests to secure the 7-2 victory.

WCHS had three junior varsity regulars in the varsity lineup and all three performed well. Playing up for the first time this season, Ashley Richardson accounted for the Lynx only singles win; she clipped Kacie Thompson, 11-9, in the No. 6 match.

Erin Larson and Megan Carpenter worked together for the Lynx in doubles, as they dominated North Polk’s Rebecca Reid and Emily Washington, 10-3.

“I was extremely pleased with Ashley’s performance,” WCHS head coach Erica Munkel said. “I was happy to see how those three played. I know some of them will be coming back next year.”

WCHS No. 1 player Lynne Chalfant battled Carly Madsen down to the wire before falling, 10-8. Carpenter took seven games off Devon Blessman in the No. 4 match.

Ballard rolls

HUXLEY – Already a 9-0 loser to Ballard earlier this season, WCHS knew it would be difficult to gain any traction in Saturday’s Class 1A team regionals first round.

The Bombers were just too good again, as they stormed to a 5-0 victory.

“Ballard is fantastic,” Munkel said. “I think the girls learned a lot from watching them and playing against them.”

Ballard put a similar 5-0 thumping on North Polk in the quarterfinals to advance to the regional semifinals this weekend.

Of the five matches that were played to completion, Ballard won five of the 10 sets at love.

WCHS will travel to Fort Dodge this afternoon for a dual meet against St. Edmond. The Lynx will then prepare for Thursday’s regional singles and doubles tournament in Waterloo.
