Lynx boys finish at the nets

SPENCER — The Webster City boys singles and doubles tennis teams were in action on Wednesday in a Class 1A sectional.

Both singles and doubles teams were eliminated in their first match.

“All in all the boys all did some good things,” said Webster City head coach Mark Fisher. “I’ve been happy with how coachable they have been all season and it was good to finally get a chance to help them during a match.

“There was just so much catching up to do with them in terms of match adjustments and things to think about that can’t be covered in practice, and it felt like we were just getting started with that and there wasn’t enough time.”

In doubles, the freshman pair of Zayden Card and James Elliott lost 6-0, 6-0 to Garrit DeVos and Trae Hoskinson of Cherokee.

Junior Hank Christeson and senior Rogan Nepereny lost to Cherokee’s freshman duo Tyler Kohn and Thomas Rushman, 6-0, 6-2.

“Rogan and Hank drew a couple of freshmen, but really good athletes and the top-two players on the Cherokee team,” Fisher said. “It was fun watching them evolve through the match and make some of the adjustments we talked about. They just ran into a really good team.”

Sophomore Jesse Toftee lost to Will Kleis of Spirit Lake, 6-2, 6-1.

“Jesse had some chances and made some nice adjustments,” Fisher said. “It will be good to see how he improves as he gains more experience and consistency.”

Junior Tyler Vaszquez fell 6-0, 6-0 to third seed Brady Shultz of Bishop Heelan, 6-0, 6-0.

“I thought Tyler did some really good things and played some good points,” Fisher said. “Had he not drawn a seed, I think he could have won a match. But it was good to see him battle, despite what the show scores.”
