WEBSTER CITY — Nine holes, four scorers and two tiebreakers weren’t enough to decide a North Central Conference dual meet at the Webster City Links on Tuesday.

A three-hole playoff was needed to determine a winner, as Humboldt gained the upper-hand by six strokes over Webster City to claim the victory.

Both teams carded scores of 167. With identical scores out of the Nos. 5 and 6 players for both teams, the Lynx and Wildcats each sent four players back onto the course for the playoff.

“I was happy with the scores,” WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said after a meet that included a 15-minute delay for a thunderstorm that rolled through the area after just one hole had been completed. “The guys are getting better and that’s all we can hope for is improving.”

Returning Class 3A first-team all-state player Nathan Ferrell led WCHS and the field, as he claimed the medalist honor with a 2-over-par 38. The junior recorded seven pars and just two bogeys on the par-5 second and par-3 eighth holes.

A perfectionist on the course, Dawson said Ferrell wasn’t particularly pleased with his round on the flat course that is set up for birdies.

“Nathan didn’t play very well according to his standards … he missed some putts,” Dawson said. “But he’s the medalist, so you can’t really complain too much about that.”

Playing out of the No. 3 position, Austin Carpenter notched a 41 for the Lynx. His tour included a birdie on the par-5 third hole, but he followed it up with six consecutive bogeys.

Drake Doering added a 43, while Jackson Leman and Josh Casady both fired rounds of 45 for the Lynx. Trey Lyons rounded out the roster with a 49.

Humboldt’s Gabe Gidel claimed the runner-up medal with a 40, one stroke in front of Carpenter and Wildcats’ teammate Jamison Heinz. Jack Arndt and Isaac Thurm both produced 43’s for Humboldt.
