Webster City wraps up cross country season
WAVERLY — The Webster City cross country team concluded their season here Wednesday evening at a Class 3A state qualifying meet.
The Lynx boys placed ninth overall and the girls were 11th.
Junior Justin Callahan was the top finisher for the WCHS boys, as he clocked a time of 17:28 to place 17:28. Jack Barner went 17:52 to finish 43rd while Gabe Thumma placed 47th in 18:11.
Ivan Lopez was 63rd (19:02), Jackson Olmstead finished 65th (19:19), Kaleb Draeger was 68th (19:31) and Kyzer Zinnel finished 70th (19:36).
For the WCHS girls, sophomore Izzy Grossoehme placed a team-high 42nd in a time of 21:21. Sydney Oswald was 69th (24:35), Lydia VanDeer was 71st (25:30), Heidi Mendoza was 78th (27:48) and Karina Murray was 79th (28:45).
“It was a perfect night for racing,” WCHS head coach Derek Turner said. “We knew that we had a chance for a few individuals to make a run at qualifying, but it would take a perfect performance. We got out fast and tried to hold position but unfortunately couldn’t maintain.
“Despite that, we had a ton of PRs on both sides. I’m really proud of the effort level.”
The race was the final one for Natalie Eggers, Caroline Ehn, Murray, Oswald and VanDeer. The girls are scheduled to welcome back Grossoehme and Mendoza.
The boys are slated to return their entire lineup.
“We lose several seniors on the girls side, and wish them the best as they move on,” Turner said. “For the boys, we return everyone so we should have a great shot of making some noise next year.”
