South Hamilton assistant football coaches honored

Kyle Galetich and Trev Houck are integral parts of the South Hamilton football coaching staff.

For their efforts this past season, the duo were honored by the Iowa Football Coaches Association as assistants of the year in Class 1A.

“The two of them have been the core of our coaching staff ever since I started as a volunteer coaching at South Hamilton,” South Hamilton head coach Paul Skartvedt said. “They both are a big reason why we have been so successful.

“Kyle can take a totally new group of offensive players and shape them into a running machine. Trev on the defensive side will bring new kids that might have been defensive backs and teach them to be a great linebacker. They both are very good teachers in the school and on the field.”

The Hawks went 8-2 this past fall, reaching the second round of the playoffs.

With Galetich leading the offense, South Hamilton surpassed 50 points four times this past season, including a high of 66. They finished ranked fourth in the entire state in rushing yards.

Houck, meanwhile, had the defense in fine form with two shutouts and six other games of allowing 14 points or less.

South Hamilton has won at least four games nine of the last 10 years, with four eight-win campaigns during that time.

“One reason that I took the head coaching position was because both of them were going to be helping me along the way,” Skartvedt said. “We would not be the team we are without either of them.”
