Lynx hammer Eagles

EAGLE GROVE — Following a hard fought battle with No. 2-ranked (Class 4A) Ankeny Centennial, the Webster City baseball team was eager to take what they’ve learned and use that experience to improve themselves.

The Lynx applied that experience, as the purple and gold’s bats came to life and grounded Eagle Grove in a 18-2 nonconference contest held this past Tuesday at Greenwood Park.

Compared to their first outing of the season, where the Lynx struggled against one of the best hurlers in the state in Joey Oakie, the bats came alive against the Eagles.

Senior CJ Hisler, in the midst of state track preparations, was perfect at the dish while driving in four runs through one double and two singles. Junior Briar Klaver had three RBI thanks to a double and a single, while teammate Trevyn Lyons also picked up three RBI from two base hits.

Junior Josh Stansfield had two RBI, due to a double — one of five doubles attained by the Lynx, with the other extra base hits coming from the bats of junior Josh Griep and senior Ty McKinney.

Sophomore Brady Asklund earned his first win of the season, allowing just two hits and two runs while fanning five Eagle batters in four innings. McKinney came in as relief, with one strikeout on nine pitchers. McKinney and Lyons also captured stolen bases.

With the win, the Lynx improved to 1-1 overall, while Eagle Grove dipped down to .500 with a 1-1 record.

The purple and gold are back in action today, facing off against Ballard in a non-conference bout set for 7:30 p.m. at Nite Hawk Baseball Diamond in Slater. The Bombers (0-1) fell to Dallas Center-Grimes, 4-1, this past Monday in Dallas Center.

Webster City started hot, plating three runs in the top of the first. Eagle Grove countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, before the Lynx overwhelmed the Eagles with three runs in the second to establish a 6-3 lead.

Junior Keegan Hisler had a hit and stolen base for the winning side, while freshman Jaxon Griffith tallied a stolen base and scored a run for the purple and gold.
