WEBSTER CITY — A second slow start in as many nights made it tough for the Webster City girls here Monday night in their home opener, as Carroll posted a 61-39 victory.

Alley Odland scored 13 points and Chloe Andersen added 11 for the Lynx (0-2 overall), who fell to Boone last week, 69-41.

“Offensively, I thought we were a bit unsure at times and not playing with the pace we would like,” Webster City head coach Mark Fisher said. “That’s something I obviously need to do a better job of preparing us for in practices. I give them a ton of credit for their defense, but we also have to be able to attack that pressure and get ourselves open looks from it.

“That’s something we’ll look at in practice, so I can get them better prepared to do that. We also just missed some good open looks, but that’s something else we can keep working at.”

Carroll led 13-5 after the first and held a 14-point edge at the half. They outscored the Lynx 17-4 following the break.

Andersen also had a team-high five rebounds with three made 3-pointers, while Olivia Gallentine grabbed four boards. Adysen Poppen scored four points with Addyson Beaulieu, Kennedy Halling, Ava Peterson, Caitlyn Gapp and Livia Kasch each scoring two.

“Give a ton of credit to Carroll,” Fisher said. “That is an athletic group of really good ball players. I was impressed with how fast they were able to play and how tenacious their defense was. Just a really well coached group.

“For us, I thought we made some great strides from our first game on Friday. I thought our defense was much improved and that we defended at a level good enough to win the game. They present a lot of challenges with their ability to drive and get to the rim, kick out for 3’s, and fight on the glass. But I thought our girls made some really great adjustments early in the game and really showed a lot of fight on that side of the ball.”

The Lynx faced Pocahontas Area Tuesday night.

“Overall, again a big step in the right direction,” Fisher said. “Been very impressed with how hard this group has worked, and feel strongly that we’re much better then we were last week.”
