Lynx volleyball team bows out
EPWORTH — Western Dubuque started quick and never let up Thursday night, as the fifth-rated Bobcats ousted Webster City, by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-12 in Class 4A, Region 6 volleyball semifinal round action.
Webster City finishes the season with a record of 21-16, while Western Dubuque (23-10) advances to the Regional final to be held in Epworth on Tuesday against Charles City.
After falling behind 5-1 in the opening set, the Lynx battled back, closing the gap to 9-7. WDHS reeled off the next 10 points, though, to take command and coast to the win.
The teams traded series of points in set two and the Lynx, behind two Sierra Rattenborg aces, took a 10-9 edge, but could not maintain the momentum and the Bobcats slowly pulled away to take the set.
The Lynx scored first in set three, but with the score tied 4-4, Western went on a 15-5 run and never looked back to win the match in three straight sets.
Eight Lynx players closed out their volleyball career for the purple and gold: Alley Odland, Fallon Casey, Sierra Rattenborg, Shelby Brim, Joslin Gourley, Reese Casey, Livia Kasch and Abby Gallentine.
The match also was the last for Lynx head coach Jess Howard, who will step down to devote full-time to her role as activities director at Webster City.
