North Union comes up short in semis

Underdog Wilton did it again here Wednesday, stunning No. 2 North Union to reach the Class 2A finals.

Just 24 hours removed from besting third-ranked and then-unbeaten Logan-Magnolia, the Beavers topped the Warriors, 14-1 in six innings. Wilton (28-6) will face Iowa City Regina in the championship game on Friday on Kruger Seeds Field at 5 p.m. inside Rogers Park.

Four hits and a walk in the second resulted in a 4-0 lead for Wilton, as Catie Hook had a two-RBI double. The Beavers plated two more runs in the thir, another in the fourth and exploded for seven in the sixth.

“It’s definitely disappointing because we didn’t play our best in either game,” NU head coach Kim Price said. “We had 15 errors coming in all season and had nine in two games so that is hard to swallow.

“I know we are happy to be here and we’ll focus over these next couple days for the third place game.”

Peyton Souhrada was 3-for-4 with two RBI at the plate for Wilton, while Madelyn Wade drove in four runs and Taylor Drayfahl had four hits, drove in three and scored twice.

“It was great to get the lead and play from that,” Drayfahl said. “It allowed us to just have fun and gave us a sense of relief. We’re excited to be in the finals for our team and the community.”

Charlotte Brown pitched around several jams, getting outs with runners in scoring position in the second, third and fifth innings. She also drove in a run in the sixth.

North Union was seeking its first title game appearance after advancing to the final four with a win in the quarters over Louisa-Muscatine. Emily Meyer connected on an RBI-double in the third, but the Warriors were unable to capitalize with two more runners on.

Libby Stevens had two hits for the Warriors.

“I’m sad but also happy because we didn’t win a game here last year and won one so far this year,” NU senior Cassie Beadle said. “We’ll come out ready to go for the third place game.”
