Practice pays off for Lynx, who advance to districts

Klaver, Arnold, Stoakes and Schwering all in top 12

ORANGE CITY — Getting an early look at Landsmeer Golf Club on Tuesday paid postseason-saving dividends for the Webster City boys’ golf team on Wednesday.

Getting familiar and comfortable on the links-style course was pivotal for the Lynx during a Class 3A sectional tournament, as they turned in their best round of the year to advance to next Monday’s district tournament at the Spencer Country Club.

WCHS shot a 318 to finish third behind meet host and sectional champion MOC-Floyd Valley (304) and runner-up Spencer (312).

The top two teams were guaranteed advancement to districts. A third team moved on because MOC-Floyd Valley finished first or second.

“That’s the best we’ve played all year,” WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said. “We went up there (on Tuesday) and played it, and that helped our kids tremendously. It was a really good practice (on Tuesday) and we needed it.”

WCHS had something to prove too. Dawson and his players were disappointed with the team’s performance at the North Central Conference tournament on Monday en route to a fourth-place finish, but they answered the bell when the season was on the line.

“We redeemed ourselves from our performance on Monday,” Dawson said. “We weren’t happy about that.”

Beau Klaver, Garrett Arnold, Devon Stoakes and Drew Schwering all finished inside the top 12 individually to send WCHS on to districts. Klaver and Arnold both shot 37 on the front nine and then hung on over the final nine holes that were susceptible to the gusty winds to shoot matching 78s, which tied for ninth. Stoakes was just two shots back in 11th place with an 80, and Schwering was two more strokes back with an 82, good for a piece of 12th place.

Cael Nixon (17th) and Braden Doering (23rd) added rounds of 85 and 87, respectively.

“Devon is our most improved player this year,” Dawson said. “He spent a lot of time (on Tuesday) working on bunker shots and he got up and down twice out of the bunkers (on Wednesday).

“We spent a lot of time on the golf course (on Tuesday) and Garrett figured some things out.”

Monday’s district tournament will tee off at 10 a.m. The top two teams will qualify for the state tournament and three will advance if Spencer finishes first or second.

“We’re familiar with the course, we play an invite early in the year there and all of our guys have been there,” Dawson said. “We feel good about it.”
