Bronco Relays the Hawks’ playground

SH GIRLS 6 FOR 6 IN RELAYS, WIN 11 EVENTS AND TEAM TITLE

BELMOND — Six teams were entered in Friday’s Belmond-Klemme Bronco Relays, and an all-star team comprised of five of them still wouldn’t have beaten No. 6.

That’s how good — how dominant — the South Hamilton girls’ track and field team was on the unfamiliar grounds.

The Hawks competed in 16 events and won 11 of them. They were a perfect 6 for 6 in the relays in which they entered. They double-medaled in three of the individual events and went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run.

The end result was a team championship total of 115 points, almost double the production of runner-up Hampton-Dumont/CAL (65). West Hancock (56) was third.

A total of 13 South Hamilton athletes went home with at least one gold medal. Nine were a part of multiple event victories. Kelbe Krumm, Ashlyn Erickson and Makena Galetich all won four gold medals and still didn’t hold the team lead. That distinction went to Kate Barkema with five.

And on and on the superlatives went.

Barkema (100 meters, 13.46 seconds), Krumm (200, 28.08), Mercedes Beaune (1,500, 6:08.82) and Mackenzy Grady (discus, 114 feet, 7 inches) were all individual winners. Madison Beaune (800, 2:51.44) and McKenna Miller (1,500, 6:16.85) were silver medalists, while Erickson (200, 28.75), Anna Lammers (400, 1:08.55) and Miller (800, 2:51.87) collected bronze medals.

But it was the relay events where South Hamilton really packed on the points.

The Hawks won the 4×100 (53.02), 4×200 (1:53.67), 4×400 (4:38.04), 4×800 (11:14.76), sprint medley (1:57.15) and distance medley (4:58.23). They gave the other five teams a chance by not entering the shuttle hurdle relay.

Barkema, Krumm, Galetich and Tanna Thompson were on the 4×100 and 4×200 quartets. Erickson and Lammers joined Galetich and Barkema on the 4×400. The Beaune twins, Lammers and Kailyn Northrop competed in the 4×800.

The usual foursome of Barkema, Galetich, Krumm and Erickson cruised in the sprint medley. Anna Holm and Zoey Duns ran the 200 legs, Madison Beaune the 400 and Erickson the 800 on the distance medley.

Although it may be impossible, South Hamilton will attempt to replicate the performance on its home track on Tuesday when it hosts the George Abell/Hawkette Relays at 4:30 p.m.
