WCHS finishes off another NCC foe, moves to 7-2 in duals

CLEAR LAKE — Say hello to the unofficial North Central Conference girls’ tennis champion.

Although the league won’t officially recognize a champion until next spring, Webster City laid claim to the honor this spring Monday evening with a 7-2 road victory over Clear Lake.

Now 7-2 on the season, the Lynx are 5-0 against their league rivals, and with the entire varsity roster returning next season, it’s not hard to pick a preseason favorite in 2022.

“It’s a nice accomplishment for the girls to now own wins over the other four (NCC) schools that have tennis,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Hopefully this also gives us some momentum heading into conference play next season and beyond.

“I thought we really did some good things. We had some dominating matches, we had some matches that we really ground through, and we had a few that taught us some things that we’ll need to correct moving forward.”

WCHS put the dual out of reach by going 5-1 in singles. Kayley Wibholm, Mackenzie Burney, Joslin Gourley, Makaylee Draeger and McKinzey Koestner all picked up victories.

The Lynx won two of three doubles bouts. Burney and Draeger, the team’s No. 2 duo, remained perfect on the season with an 8-1 triumph.

“What really sets them apart is how good they are at communicating with each other,” Fisher said of his unbeaten doubles team. “They’ve been a real fun doubles team to coach this year.”
