Nothing to be Blue about for Tanner in hurdles

SH junior matches his school record at North Polk coed

ALLEMAN — Once was great, but Tanner Blue stepped onto the track looking to validate his success here Monday night.

Consider it done.

Just days after breaking a decades old school record in the 110-meter high hurdles, Blue matched his record time of 15.13 seconds at the North Polk Coed Comet Invitational. It was only good enough for second — Greene County’s Jackson Morton came out of the blocks hot and then held off Blue down the stretch to win in 15.01 — but it was a confidence booster none the less.

“Running against the kid from Greene County gave him a lot of good confidence,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said of Blue. “He’s healthier now than he was earlier in the season. He was having shin problems at the start of the year and now he’s running with confidence.”

Blue was so dominant in the 400 lows that he took a tumble over the final hurdle, got to his feet and still managed to win by more than a second. He crossed in 1:02.63.

“That would have probably been his best time ever had he not hit that hurdle, so he ran really well,” Paulsen said.

South Hamilton won four events in all — a fifth victory in the sprint medley was wiped out on a disqualification — and scored 106 points to finish second to host North Polk (178).

Austin Busch was his usual dominant self in the throws and he was joined on the podium by teammate Trevor Thompson. Busch won the shot put with a heave of 53 feet, 1 inch, while Thompson was third at 44-1. Busch also secured discus gold (127-0).

Brock Galetich, Kyler Hodnefield, Ty Skartvedt and Freddie Lewis teamed up to win the distance medley relay (3:52.40) by close to four seconds. Lewis added a silver in the 800 (2:05.96), one place in front of Skartvedt (2:09.98), while Galetich picked up a pair of individual bronze medals in the 100 (11.24) and 200 (23.43).

South Hamilton will make the trek to PCM High School on Thursday for the Heart of Iowa Conference meet.
