Lynx stingy defensively, blank Ballard for second straight win

Perez notches 2 more goals, Perin also finds back of net

HUXLEY — The defense locked down its end of the pitch and the offense did more than enough at the other end to propel the Webster City boys’ soccer team to its second straight win here last night.

Eduardo Perez scored a pair of goals, while Matt Perin had one as well for the Lynx in a 4-0 shutout win over Ballard, which harmed itself with an own goal midway through the second half.

WCHS (2-1) dominated possession and head coach Craig Signorin credited his defense for its best match of the season. Walfre Lopez, Jake Lahr, Levi Mussman, Jon Magdaleno and Luis Montes worked together to make life easy on goalkeeper Gage Rossing, who was forced to make just one save. Ballard got just three shots off and only one was on frame.

“I thought our defense played almost a complete game for us,” Signorin said. “It’s always a good night when we don’t give up any goals.”

WCHS missed too many scoring opportunities in Signorin’s eyes, but the Lynx finally found the back of the net in the 25th minute off a though ball from Martin Kasonga to Perin.

Eduardo Perez, the Lynx freshman midfielder, took over front there. He poured in his fourth goal of the season into the top right corner in the 29th and then took advantage of a free kick for another in the 56th.

WCHS rattled off 22 shots, but only nine were on frame. Signorin says his crew will need to be more efficient going forward, starting on Saturday at the Hudson tournament where the Lynx will face the host Pirates and Davenport Assumption.

“Our play in the middle and up top was too direct at times, which made us not possess the ball and switch the field as much as we should have,” Signorin said. “We missed five or six one-on-ones with the goalie and that needs to get cleaned up quick.”
