EARLHAM — A long, long … long night on the track resulted in a fifth-place finish for the South Hamilton boys’ squad at Tuesday’s Earlham Co-Ed.

The meet kicked off with the field events at 4:30 p.m, and didn’t end until six hours later. During that time, the temperatures dipped down 15 degrees, and even though the whipping winds eventually dissipated, it still took a toll.

“It wasn’t a lot of fun,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen admitted.

Facing a large field of 11 teams, the Hawks won a pair of events and six medals in all en route to 67 points. ACGC and Van Meter were the dominant forces, as they battled to the bitter end for the meet crown. ACGC came out on top with 133 points, four more than Van Meter (129). Des Moines Christian (96) and Earlham (89) were third and fourth, respectively.

Austin Busch continued his strong season in the shot put with a gold-medal toss of 50 feet, 51⁄4 inches, but the South Hamilton junior fell victim to the wind in the discus and scratched on all three of his attempts.

Still, Busch is firmly inside the cut-off in both events for next week’s Drake Relays. He currently sits sixth in both events; the top 24 in the state will qualify.

“The wind came into play in the discus,” Paulsen said. “He said he threw well, he just couldn’t keep it in because of the wind. But it was a good learning experience for him.”

Tanner Blue was the Hawks’ top performer on the track, as he won the 110-meter high hurdles and was third in the 400 hurdles. Blue blitzed the highs’ field in a winning time of 16.02 seconds and clocked in at 1:01.02 in the 400 hurdles.

“Tanner had a good night in the hurdles,” Paulsen said. “He kind of blew away the field (in the 110 highs).”

Brock Galetich, Kyler Hodnefield, Freddie Lewis and Ty Skartvedt teamed up to finish second in the distance medley relay (3:55.40). The same foursome also secured bronze in the sprint medley relay (1:42.04).

South Hamilton will hit another co-ed this evening in Manson.
