STORY CITY — Webster City head wrestling coach Chad Hisler takes his team to its personal playground on the final Saturday of January each year. And it’s always a good time.

Lopsided victories are the norm. The team title going home with the Lynx is predictable.

The most recent visit lived up to expectations too.

Winning five duals by an average margin of 46.6 points, the Lynx claimed the Norsemen Duals for the sixth time in the last eight years on Saturday. Over its eight visits, WCHS has produced a 37-2 record and has outscored its opponents by 1,733 team points.

Uh, wow.

The Lynx dismantled Central Decatur (64-13), Roland-Story (53-15), OA-BCIG (77-4) and Saydel (60-10), and capped the day by toppling North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont/CAL (48-27).

Five WCHS grapplers went 5-0. Four more put up a 4-1 record. Twelve of the 14 in the lineup produced a winning record.

Dominant. From beginning to end.

“It was a good day,” Hisler said after his 16th-ranked (Class 2A) squad improved to 16-3 on the season. “Everybody had some tough matches.”

With a full roster, WCHS feasted on forfeits. The Lynx were awarded 26 free wins and went 28-15 in contested bouts.

Fourth-ranked Carson Doolittle (106), top-ranked Cam Phetxoumphone (113), Chase Rattenborg (132), 10th-ranked CJ Hisler (182) and Trey Shannon (285) were all perfect. Austin Mason (138), Brady Jessen (160), Cole Bingham (170) and Dylan Burnette-Bingham (220) all won four times.

Doolittle and Rattenborg claimed signature victories in the final competition before this weekend’s sectional tournament.

Doolittle scored on a first-period takedown and that was enough for a 2-1 win over fifth-ranked (2A) Kade Blume of Roland-Story, who was unbeaten prior to stepping onto the mat with the WCHS freshman.

“It gives (Doolittle) confidence, but he knows he could see (Blume) this week (sectionals) and the week after (districts) and the week after (state),” Hisler said. “They’re going to continue to be close matches every time.”

Rattenborg knocked off his second NCC champion of the week, as he claimed a wild 16-12 win over eighth-ranked (2A) Jakyb Kapp of Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Kapp was the league champion at 132, while Rattenborg was third in the same bracket. It followed Rattenborg’s win by fall over 126-pound conference champion and fourth-ranked (2A) Jase Goodell of Humboldt on Tuesday.

“He wrestled really well all week,” Hisler said of Rattenborg. “I think the conference tournament was his wake-up call, realizing this is his last go.”

Jessen and Shannon led the team with three pins each. Doolittle, Jordan Vankham (145), Evan Estlund (152), Bingham and Burnette-Bingham all decked two of their foes.

Phetxoumphone got just one match — a fall over Roland-Story’s Ben Sarver in 2:35 — and four forfeits. The 2020 state champion will take a 70-match winning streak into the postseason.
