THURSDAY BRIEFS: HAWK HOOPS AND WRESTLING, ATTENDANCE NOTICE

GALETICH SCORES 14 IN HAWKS’ WIN: The South Hamilton girls’ basketball team turned up the defensive intensity and stymied St. Edmond for a 36-27 non-conference victory Thursday night in Fort Dodge.

The Hawks (2-4) outscored St. Edmond 12-7 over the final eight minutes to pull away.

Freshman Makena Galetich scored a game-high 14 points for South Hamilton. She went 9 of 11 at the free throw line and sprinkled in a second-half 3-pointer.

Mackenzy Grady added six points, Emma Lewis pitched in five and Tanna Thompson added four more.

Mya McClain and Kacey Kruthoff both had six points for the Gaels.

SH BOYS CRUISE BY GAELS: A hot start and solid defensive effort over 32 minutes erased a two-game losing streak, as the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team ran by St. Edmond, 61-44, Thursday night in Fort Dodge.

The Hawks (4-2) led by 19 points, 48-29, after three quarters and were never threatened by the Gaels over the final eight minutes.

St. Edmond was unable to handle Carter Hewitt in the paint, as the Hawks’ 6-foot-6 senior center poured in 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting. He also corralled six rebounds.

Landen Skartvedt buried three 3-pointers for nine points. Freddie Lewis and Austin Busch chipped in eight each; Tycin Barkema and Clayton Ubben both had six.

Quinten McCarville (11 points) and Drew Schaeffer (10 points) reached double figures for the Gaels.

HAWK GRAPPLERS GO 1-2 AT QUAD: Third-ranked (Class 1A) Lane Swenson, Brent Greenfield (182), third-ranked Trevor Thompson (195) and Colton Willis (285) combined to go 12-0 with nine pins for the South Hamilton wrestling team at a quadrangular in State Center Thursday night.

Thompson racked up three falls, while Swenson, Greenfield and Willis all had two. The remaining three wins for the quartet were all by forfeit.

Swenson, Greenfield, Thompson and Willis are currently a combined 34-1 on the season; 24 of the victories have been by fall.

The Hawks beat Collins-Maxwell, 48-23, but dropped duals to West Marshall, 43-42, and Iowa Falls-Alden, 51-30. South Hamilton and West Marshall were even at 42 after 14 weights; the Trojans earned the extra point and dual win on criteria.

Keyton Remsburg (113) and Kaelen Miller (145) both went 2-1 with two falls for the Hawks.

ATTENDANCE PROTOCOL UPDATES: Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced on Wednesday that she has lifted some of the restrictions on fan attendance at high school sporting events. However, Webster City athletic director Joe Shanks says that no changes will be made for the time being at Lynx events.

Players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members and dance performers will still receive two tickets for family members through the end of the month. Shanks says the school district and North Central Conference will revisit the policy following the holiday break.

South Hamilton athletic director Todd Coy announced changes to the protocols. Beginning this evening, he says Heart of Iowa Conference schools will allow participants’ entire households — up to eight members — to attend events. This includes players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members and dance performers.
