HAWK BASKETBALL BRIEFS

NO. 9 R-S THUMPS HAWKS: Ninth-ranked (Class 3A) Roland-Story forced 30 turnovers and rolled to a 65-27 girls’ basketball win over South Hamilton Friday night in Jewell.

Twelve different Norsemen players reached the scoring column and they rained in 10 3-pointers against the overwhelmed Hawks.

“We played hard, but we need to learn to value the ball more,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “It’s just impossible to win when we only get 32 field goal attempts to their 61.”

Reagan Barkema rattled off 17 points and Madeline Morton had 10 for Roland-Story (2-2, 1-0 HOIC). The Norsemen led 27-12 at halftime and then outscored the Hawks 24-10 in the third period.

Caleigh Hewitt had six points and seven rebounds for South Hamilton. Paige Evans, Zoey Duns and Makena Galetich all finished with four points. Duns collected a team-high eight caroms.

NORSEMEN DOMINATE FIRST HALF, BEAT HAWKS: Roland-Story outscored South Hamilton 15-7 in the first quarter and led by 11, 29-18, at halftime in a boys’ basketball game Friday night in Jewell. And as it turned out, the Norsemen needed that cushion.

South Hamilton rallied in the second half and even took the lead briefly in the fourth quarter, but Roland-Story had just enough left in the tank for a 49-46 Heart of Iowa Conference win.

“I was really happy with how the guys came out after halftime and fought back,” South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber said. “It could’ve been really easy to just roll over and take the beating, but we showed some resiliency.”

Roland-Story (4-0, 2-0 HOIC) sat in a 2-3 zone and allowed South Hamilton (4-3, 1-2 HOIC) to hoist up 3-pointers. The strategy worked; the Hawks went just 4 of 22 (18 percent) from behind the arc. The Norsemen weren’t exactly sizzling the nets either, as they drained just 3 of 16 (19 percent) shots from long range.

Freddie Lewis and Austin Busch led South Hamilton with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Carter Hewitt added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Luke Patton (12), Nolan Faber (11) and Sam Skaar (10) all reached double figures for Roland-Story.
