SATURDAY’S PREP BRIEFS: BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING

WCHS girls’ upset bid falls short

WEBSTER CITY — A whale of a performance from Grace Hoversten wasn’t enough to propel the Webster City girls’ basketball team to an upset victory inside the WCHS gymnasium on Saturday.

Eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Gilbert did just enough in the final three minutes to break a 45-all tie and prevail over the Lynx, 50-47.

“The girls came out fighting, they came out working and they played really well,” WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said.

Hoversten did all she could with 15 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. The WCHS senior was a perfect 8 for 8 at the free throw line and the Lynx (8-9) went 19 of 22 overall at the stripe.

Taylor McKinney added 10 points and two assists. Leah Kasch came off the bench to supply nine points.

Ava Hawthorne, a sophomore and already a UNI commit, paced Gilbert (13-3) with 19 points and Emma Bulman provided 16 more.

Inconsistency leads to Lynx loss

WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City boys’ basketball team is consistent about one thing — it’s perpetually inconsistent.

The Tigers (11-4) outscored WCHS (9-6) 15-7 in the third quarter to take command.

“If we’re going to move forward and start beating the better teams on our schedule, we have to be consistent,” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “We can’t play well and then disappear for six or seven minutes, but that was the case (on Saturday).”
