FORT DODGE — All Tavis Eklund needed was for the first shot to go down.

Once it did, the Webster City junior settled in, scoring eight points in the two overtime sessions to help the Lynx claim a 67-58 victory over St. Edmond here Friday night.

“It was almost like two or three games in one,” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “I’ve got to give credit to our guys because they battled all night. The last three minutes (of the fourth quarter) and all of the overtimes, we played really well. Being able to execute in OT the way we did, it was good.”

Eklund, the leading scorer on the year for WCHS (8-3, 5-3 NCC), finished with 13 points despite missing his first nine shots from the field.

Tyler Olson led the way for the Lynx with a game-high 23, and Carter Neuroth added 13.

For the Gaels (4-8, 2-6 NCC), Jerris Duncan scored 14, Jed Tracy added 13 and Hayden Mayer finished with nine.

After falling behind by as many as seven, St. Edmond chipped away in the third quarter behind Duncan and Drew Schaeffer. The two combined for 15 points as they outscored the Lynx 20-9.

“I don’t know what it is about our third quarters, but we were just really sloppy with the ball again and couldn’t find anything offensively,” McKinney said.

Cael Kolacia and Schaeffer started the fourth off with buckets before WCHS would go on a run of its own.

Despite missing 14 free throws, the Lynx were able to force the first overtime on a putback bucket by Olson. That came after freshman Ty McKinney scored four points in just 34 seconds.

The two teams exchanged baskets in the first extra session, as Duncan and Tracy scored for St. Edmond with Eklund and Olson added points for the Lynx.

In the second overtime, Olson got WCHS going with a three-point play. Mayer made it 57-56 before a 5-0 burst for the Lynx gave them breathing room.

WCHS made 5 of 6 shots from the line to seal the win, as Eklund sank three and Drake Doering two.

Olson had 11 boards, with Eklund grabbing seven and both Neuroth and Doering five.

Lynx tripped up by No. 10 MSM, 65-57

GILBERT — Tenth-ranked (Class 1A) Martensdale-St. Marys built an early nine point lead and never trailed en route to a 65-57 win over Webster City in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

MSM (13-1), which has won 12 consecutive games since its only loss to Woodward-Granger on Dec. 5, received 19 points from Isaac Gavin and 12 more from Trey Baker.

Trailing by five at the intermission, WCHS (8-4) got as close as one point with under four minutes remaining in the contest, but MSM closed on an 11-4 run to escape.

“The effort was great, especially after Friday night (a double-overtime win over St. Edmond),” WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. “The kids went out and really got after it hard. We were better after we played that game (on Saturday).”

Tyler Olson paced the Lynx with 16 points and Carter Neuroth also reached double figures with 10.
