JEWELL — South Hamilton turned up the defensive intensity and, basically, could have named its score en route to a fourth consecutive Heart of Iowa Conference victory on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.

The Hawks limited Saydel to just five field goals and got everyone in uniform involved in a 63-11 rout. It’s the fewest points allowed by South Hamilton in at least 15 seasons.

“We came out and controlled the game defensively and created some easy opportunities to get us going early on,” South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber said. “The defensive effort was phenomenal. Everyone that came in brought energy and did the little things it takes to get stops.”

South Hamilton (4-1, 4-0 HOIC) led 18-4 after one quarter and 35-7 at the half. And it only got worse over the final 16 minutes.

Brock Galetich and Cade Balvanz both outscored Saydel (1-4, 0-4 HOIC), as they scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. Galetich came off the bench and was perfect at the offensive end. He connected on all six of his shots, including four from behind the 3-point arc.

Doran Lutjen pitched in 11 points and Quinton Grove had a double-double — 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“As good as our defense was, I think I was more pleased with our offense,” Juber said. “Overall I was very pleased with the effort and the efficiency in which we took care of business.”

South Hamilton cashed in on a season-high 10 3-pointers. Lutjen canned three and Kyler Hodnefield ripped the nets twice for all six of his points.

Balvanz and Carter Hewitt both corralled five rebounds, and Hodnefield collected five steals.

South Hamilton will head to Gilbert on Friday for a showdown with the Tigers where the conference lead will be on the line.
