GRINNELL — Webster City got off the dual schneid and picked up a critical component to future success — confidence — at Saturday’s Grinnell Tiger Duals.

After coming close to picking up that elusive first dual victory of the season against Ballard on Thursday, the Lynx jumped into the win column early on Saturday and added two more triumphs to finish the day 3-1. WCHS, Bondurant-Farrar and East Marshall/GMG all went 3-1; Bondurant-Farrar took home the team title via criteria.

Regardless of what the final standings said — officially, the Lynx were third — head coach Chad Hisler said his team continued to make strides.

“It’s fun to be in a dual and the kids got excited when we had a chance to win,” Hisler said. “We still made mistakes and let some matches slip away, but overall we improved a lot.”

WCHS (3-4) opened the day with a come-from-behind 39-38 victory over East Marshall/GMG. Forfeits fueled a 70-12 rout of Mount Pleasant, and the Lynx ended the day by knocking off Grinnell, 42-36.

The lone loss came at the hands of Bondurant-Farrar, 39-26.

Top-ranked Cam Phetxoumphone (106 pounds) and Cole Bingham (160) were both 4-0, while Brayden Henely (113) went 2-0. Nick Gasca (145) and CJ Hisler (170) compiled 3-1 records.

All 15 grapplers that stepped onto the mat for WCHS won at least once.

East Marshall/GMG led the Lynx throughout the opening dual, but back-to-back pins by Bingham and CJ Hisler in the final two matches swung the battle. Bingham decked Samuel Bandstra in 1:41 to get WCHS within five points, and Hisler, knowing he needed a pin to secure the dual win, reversed Logan Walton to his back for the fall in 1:09.

“Cole had a great day and it was definitely a confidence booster for (CJ),” Chad Hisler said. “His goal is just to keep improving all year long.”

Mount Pleasant put just five wrestlers on the mat in the second dual, which allowed WCHS to roll up 54 team points on forfeits. Reece Sadler (120), Austin Mason (138) and Gasca all had chances to compete and won handily for the Lynx.

Phetxoumphone was tested for only the second time this season against seventh-ranked Chase Fiser of Bondurant-Farrar, but the WCHS sophomore showed why he’s among the favorites to win a state title in Class 2A. Behind a quick takedown, two sets of near-fall points, and a third-period takedown, Phetxoumphone dominated the bout for a 10-2 major decision. Fiser’s only two points came on escapes.

“I love that (Phetxoumphone) got a full match because he gets to push himself and keep working,” Chad Hisler said. “He stays in position all the time and he’s always fluid, always moving. He just has a feel, and he’s wrestled a lot, but I think he’s always had that.”

Phetxoumphone is now 10-0 on the season, nine of those wins coming with bonus points attached.

B-F secured the dual win over WCHS by winning the final three matches, two of them by fall.

Phetxoumphone, Sadler, Bingham and Truman Klein (182) all won by fall in the win over Grinnell. Klein put Oliver Louden on his back in 1:15 to wrap up the dual with two matches remaining.

Chase Rattenborg (132), who went 2-2 on the day, nearly collected a signature victory when he put fourth-ranked Brock Beck of Grinnell on his back in the second period.

“(Beck) was flat, but Chase didn’t get the call,” Chad Hisler said. “Beck is good, but Chase caught him in a facelift right to his back and I thought he had it.”

Beck was able to regroup in the third period for a 16-10 win.

Sadler, Ryan Zuetlau (126), Evan Estlund (152), Klein and Trey Shannon (285) all went 2-2 for the Lynx. Kyle Gose (106/113), Mason, Dylan Burnette (195) and Broden Miller (220) picked up one win each.
