Kasch perfect at plate, Lynx continue to blister ball in victory

Sophomore clean-up stick 4 for 4; Stoakes 2 more hits, win in circle vs. Storm Lake

STORM LAKE — Shredding opposing pitching continued to be the strength of the Webster City softball team here Tuesday night, as the Lynx lashed 11 hits in a dominant non-conference performance.

Leah Kasch was perfect in four plate appearances to lead the way in the Lynx 8-3 victory over Storm Lake. WCHS (3-2) never trailed and took control in the third and fourth innings with seven of its eight runs off Tornadoes’ pitcher Skylar Cole.

“I thought we rebounded well from Saturday’s two losses (at the Ogden tournament),” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We came out pretty crisp defensively and offensively we applied pressure in pretty much every inning.”

That constant barrage — seven Lynx players laced at least one hit — was too much for Storm Lake (2-1), which committed six errors. Only two of the Lynx runs were earned.

“This is how we always want to hit,” Howard said. “In softball, anytime you can put pressure on and put girls on base, good things are going to happy and fortunately we did that.”

WCHS currently ranks eighth in Class 4A with a .372 team batting average.

Kasch upped her average to .500 with four hits, two of which were doubles, and she also drove in two runs.

“She’s got two years of experience at the varsity level and she’s seen a lot of softball,” Howard said of Kasch, who is just a sophomore. “She’s making good choices at the plate, getting pitches she can hit well.”

Kelly Stoakes added two more hits, including a double, but saw her average actually drop to .789. Zoey Woodle, Cynthia Whitehill, Jenna Miller, Tatum Goings and Atlanta Hopp all roped singles. Whitehill and Miller both collected an RBI, as did Taylor McKinney, and Goings swiped two bases.

Stoakes won for the second time in the circle. The right-handed pitcher allowed just five hits and no earned runs. She struck out eight.
