WEBSTER CITY — For the second time in as many meetings this season, Chloe Johnson turned the Webster City defensive zone into her personal playground.

After piling up five goals in a victory over the Lynx last month, Johnson, a sophomore, erupted for seven in the second encounter and she led Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to an 8-1 rout Monday evening at Lynx Field.

Johnson, who upped her season goals total to 26, helped the Cardinals (4-8) end a six-match losing streak.

Johnson scored three times in the opening half and Abigail Sokol found the back of the net as well to stake GHV to a 4-1 lead.

WCHS (2-8) failed to convert on a penalty kick in the 13th minute that would have trimmed its deficit to 2-1. But in the 27th minute, freshman Shelby Queen brought life to the Lynx sideline when she rifled in a shot just inside the right post.

“The girls played a hard-fought match,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said.

Johnson completely took over after the intermission. She got balls past Lynx goalkeeper Josselin Guendulay in the 44th, 58th, 62nd and 65th minutes.

GHV owed a 29-4 advantage in shots on goal. Guendulay, who was under attack from the moment the ball was put in play, made 21 saves.
