WEBSTER CITY — As it turns out, seventh-place is indeed good enough to reach the state meet.

Webster City sophomore Garrett Whitmore may have not sniffed the front of the 400-meter low hurdles field at last Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet, but his time of 57.27 seconds was fast enough to earn him one of the eight wildcard entries into the Class 3A state field, it was announced on Friday.

Eight of the 24 qualifiers in the event came from the Nevada qualifier.

Whitmore was the only event the Lynx boys’ team added to its state docket. They’ll take seven events to Des Moines later this week.

The WCHS girls’ squad was unable to earn a wildcard entry. It will also take seven events to state.

South Hamilton added a pair of additional entries on Friday.

After placing third in the 1,600 meters at the 2A State Qualifying Meet in Manson, Quinton Grove earned his spot in the state field.

The South Hamilton girls’ team earned its only invitation through the wildcard process. The shuttle hurdle relay — Emily Greenfield, Bridgit Schlafke, Rylee Woodall and Hailey Cavan — set a school record time of 1:10.19 and placed third at the qualifier. It will run on the blue oval inside Drake Stadium Thursday evening.

WCHS and South Hamilton will send a combined 21 athletes to compete in 20 events.

The state meet will kickoff Thursday morning and run through Saturday afternoon.
