WEBSTER CITY — A challenging field awaits the third-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City wrestling team at Saturday’s Perry Invitational.

Wrestling will get underway at 9:30 a.m. Two gymnasiums will be used throughout the day at Perry High School.

A total of 15 teams and 25 ranked individuals will be in attendance. Only three weights — 106 pounds, 160 and 182 — will be without a ranked grappler.

South Hamilton will also take part in the tournament.

Webster City’s leaders are sure to be tested throughout the day, starting with second-ranked junior 120-pounder Drake Doolittle (23-2), a returning Perry Invite champion. He’ll be on a collision course with fourth-ranked (3A) Zach Thompson of Perry for the third consecutive year. Thompson was awarded the 113-pound title over Doolittle in 2016 after Doolittle was called for an illegal slam in a bout he was in control of at the time. Doolittle topped Thompson in the gold-medal round a season ago, 7-3, on the strength of a pair of tilts.

There’s no guarantee Doolittle and Thompson will both reach the finals though. Also expected to be in the bracket are seventh-ranked (2A) Jack Gaukel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton and sixth-ranked (1A) Derek Graham of Eagle Grove.

Carson Hartnett (20-5) will bump down to 132 for the first time this season. The Lynx senior will be in a bracket that will include third-ranked (3A) Matthew Jordan of Des Moines East.

No. 7-ranked 170-pounder Zane Williams (19-5), another WCHS senior, could meet up with No. 4 (1A) Gunnar Grunsted of Panorama at some point during the tournament.

Caleb Olson (2-3), a junior ranked No. 6 at 195, made his season debut a week ago with mixed results. He won’t be favored to claim gold on Saturday; that distinction will go to second-ranked (2A) Cody Fisher of Woodward-Granger. Fisher beat Olson at the sectional and district tournaments a season ago.

Sixth-ranked at 220, James Cherry (16-2) is wrestling as well as anyone in the Lynx lineup. He’s coming off a pair of wins over ranked foes at last weekend’s Allie Morrison Duals in Marshalltown and he’ll likely have to get through top-ranked (3A) Greg Hagen of West Des Moines Dowling to reach the top of the podium on Saturday.

Top-ranked 285-pounder Cooper Lawson (23-0) will enter the tournament just three wins shy of becoming Webster City’s 17th 100-match winner. With 32 consecutive victories under his belt, he will be the overwhelming favorite against a heavyweight field that will feature one other ranked wrestler — No. 10 (2A) Derrin Sesker of Van Meter.

Doolittle, Hartnett and Williams all reached 100 career wins already this season. Doolittle, a 2017 state runner-up, is a staggering 108-12 in 21⁄2 years in the Lynx lineup.

South Hamilton will be led by Lane Swenson (12-11 at 138), Nathan Wilson (15-11 at 160), Nate Laube (15-10 at 170 and 182), Dominic Summers (9-5 at 195) and Zach Larson (12-11 at 220 and 285).

There will be one other No. 1-ranked wrestler in the field — (3A) 138-pounder Deville Dentis of Des Moines East.
