CONRAD — Luke Peters will take the loss. The competition meant more than the end result.

Always looking for a tough scrap, the South Hamilton senior put together a 4-1 performance at Saturday’s Storm Duals. His lone loss was a 5-2 decision to fourth-ranked (Class 2A) Michael Kent of Iowa Falls-Alden at 170 pounds in a bout that went down to the wire.

Nobody ever likes to lose, but facing the formidable foe will only help down the road.

“It was a great match for Luke and he needs matches like this,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “Luke, I thought, had a takedown at the edge of the mat in the third (period), but the referee didn’t see it that way and that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Kent was holding onto a 3-2 lead late when Peters was forced to go for broke and the result was another two points for the Cadet.

Wrestling at both 160 and 170, Peters, a two-time state qualifier, won his other four matches by fall.

South Hamilton went 1-4 and placed seventh. The Hawks dropped duals to Hudson (60-18), Iowa Falls-Alden (61-10), MFL-Mar Mac (72-9) and Rockford (51-18), but finished their day with a victory over Collins-Maxwell-Baxter (42-30) in the seventh-place dual.

“It was a tough day with tough competition,” Brodie said. “Our pool had some pretty strong lineups. But that’s also really exciting to go out and wrestle some state-caliber matches in January.”

Competing at 170 and 182, Noah Lutter joined Peters with four victories — two forfeits, a major decision and decision.

Eighth-ranked (Class 1A) 126-pounder Keaton Hetland hit speed bumps for the first time this season and settled for just two wins in five bouts. He entered the tournament unbeaten.

Bumping up to 132, Hetland dropped a match to ninth-ranked (1A) Michael Egen of MFL-Mar Mac in the opening round and then followed it up with a setback against fourth-ranked (2A) 126-pounder Dante Tacchia of Iowa Falls-Alden.

“It was tough for Keaton,” Brodie said. “You feel for him because we bumped him up in the very first match to wrestle a returning state qualifier and that (loss) just kind of rocked him a little bit. His head wasn’t quite in it (against Tacchia). But it’s good to have a day like this in January rather than February.”

Cole Ellis (152) and Nathaniel Laube (182/195) added one fall each for the Hawks.
