Wagner 4 for 4, Lynx shell Bulldogs in NCC opener for both teams

HAMPTON – Two big innings turned a nail-biter into a blowout for the Webster City baseball team here Wednesday night.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead after four innings, things escalated quickly as the Lynx pushed six runs across in the fifth and five more went up on the scoreboard in the sixth in a 12-0, 6-inning victory over North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont.

WCHS (2-1, 1-0 NCC) ripped Bulldog pitchers Caleb Chaney and Justin Kent for 12 hits, seven of them coming from Corey Wagner and Ty Schnathorst at the back end of the lineup.

Wagner went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate and bashed the game’s only extra-base hit, a double, to go along with four RBI. Schnathorst finished 2 for 3 and knocked in three runs.

“One of the differences with our offensive output was we did a lot of it with our bats, where last time out we got some help with walks and errors,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “A number of guys had solid line drives to get on base and drive runs in.

“More than anything, it was nice to see the improvement from our last time out and to continue to see growth.”

Max Hackbarth added a pair of base hits in three plate appearances for the Lynx. Rommel Martinez, Collin Oswald, Cole Reigelsberger and Dylan Steen all contributed one hit. Hackbarth and Oswald collected one RBI each.

Cameron Moen took care of the rest on the hill, as the sophomore improved to 2-0 with his second complete game in as many outings. He surrendered just three hits, struck out six and walked four. Hampton-Dumont (0-3, 0-1 NCC) only moved one runner into scoring position.

“I thought Cameron threw another real nice game,” Fisher said. “He was efficient for the most part with his pitches.”

WCHS will take its two-game win streak into tonight’s home date with Fort Dodge St. Edmond (3-1, 0-1 NCC) at 7:15 p.m.
