Winning streak reaches 13 for No. 9 Lynx

WEBSTER CITY – Clear Lake was bound and determined to not get blown out last night at Lynx Field, and the Lions succeeded.

But they sacrificed their offense in order to stay competitive.

Pushing eight and nine guys back on defense throughout the 80-minute match, Clear Lake kept the score all goose eggs until the 50th minute when ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City finally got on the scoreboard. The Lynx added another goal 12 minutes later to pick up their 13th consecutive victory, 2-0.

“It was good for us because it made us be a little bit more creative,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “We like to have a little combination play in the middle, but there was absolutely no space for that. It made the boys have to adapt.”

WCHS (15-1) went wide with the ball to Brandon Hoveland, who booted a diagonal pass to Antonio Pinna for what turned out to be the winning goal.

Landon Daniels added the insurance goal in the 62nd courtesy of a penalty kick. It was set up by a foul on Pinna inside the box.

WCHS dominated possession and piled up a 20-1 advantage in shots taken. The Lynx put 11 of them on frame, while Clear Lake (7-7) never challenged the goal or WCHS goalkeeper Ashton High.

The Lynx now sit just one win shy of tying the school record for consecutive wins and are three wins away from tying the school record for victories in a season. They’ll try to make it 14 straight this evening when they travel to Iowa Falls to face Iowa Falls-Alden at 5:30 p.m.
