Gaels avenge earlier loss to Lynx on courts

WEBSTER CITY – The St. Edmond girls’ tennis team avenged an earlier loss to Webster City and pushed the Lynx to their third consecutive dual-meet loss at the WCHS courts on Monday.

Buoyed by four singles wins, the Gaels held the advantage in doubles as well en route to a 6-3 victory. WCHS closed out its regular season with a 4-5 record.

“(St. Edmond’s) lineup was the same from the first time we played them (a 5-4 WCHS win), but ours was a little different just because of challenge matches,” WCHS head coach Erica Munkel said.

Lily Timmerman was a dominant force at the top of St. Edmond’s lineup; she blanked Courtney Lampman, 8-0, in the No. 1 singles match and then teamed up with Leah Hughett to sneak by Lampman and Rihanna Wood in the No. 1 doubles bout, 9-7.

Sierra Anderson and Erin Larson accounted for all three of the Lynx victories. Anderson disposed of Hughett, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot, while Larson needed even fewer games to get by Mackenzie Scacci, 8-3, at No. 6. Anderson and Larson then joined forces to dismantle Scacci and Madison Tarbox, 8-2.

“It was a really great night for both of them,” Munkel said of Anderson and Larson. “It was the last meet for Erin, so I was very pleased that she was able to go out with a couple of wins.”

WCHS will now turn its attention to Thursday’s Class 1A regional singles and doubles tournament. The Lynx will compete in Waterloo starting at 9 a.m. The singles and doubles champions and runners-up will advance to state.
