Flaws, Ferrari and Garrels give Lynx girls 3 more state qualifiers

WEBSTER CITY – The throwing and running events were already covered. Now, the Webster City girls’ track and field team has got the jumps covered, too.

Still ecstatic from the seven state-meet berths they automatically claimed at Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Gilbert, the Lynx added three more individuals and two more events to their haul when the wildcard qualifiers were released on Friday.

The list of nine events now includes high jumper Haley Flaws, long jumper Abbey Ferrari and 200-meter runner Marisa Garrels, who were all third on Thursday and among the next eight best performers from those around the state that didn’t finish in the top two in their respective events.

“It’s great for them and they’ve worked very hard,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said of the new additions. “Haley, we kind of thought after she jumped (she cleared 5 feet) that she would go, and then Abbey had her (personal best of 15-81?2) and that’s greats she got in. She’s had several great jumps in that range all year, but was scratching by a half-inch every time.”

Garrels will join teammate Allie Flaws in the 200.

“Marisa has continually gotten faster all year,” Howard said. “She ran a great race (on Thursday) and went under 28 seconds.

“It will be a good experience and they’re all three underclassmen.”

The WCHS boys’ track team doubled its list of state entrants from two to four on Friday.

Noah Perfect was third in the 100 on Thursday, but his time (11.24) was actually the ninth fastest time among all of the qualifiers. He’ll also run on the anchor leg of the 4×100 and will be joined by Jordan Tanner, Zane Carter and Payton Kannuan.
