No. 15 Lynx take advantage of free looks, blank Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE – In his sixth year at the helm of the Webster City boys’ soccer program, Craig Signorin knows one thing for sure: any win at Clear Lake is a good win.

So, yeah, he rode the bus home a happy man last night.

Taking advantage of a pair of egregious first-half fouls by Clear Lake, the 15th-raked (Class 2A) Lynx scored two goals off penalty kicks and essentially put the match away by the intermission on their way to a 3-0 victory.

It was the fifth straight victory and fifth shutout of the season for WCHS (7-1). The Lynx registered a 16-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge on frame.

“You always want to score goals the right way, but if they’re going to give us for sure PK’s, yeah, we’ll take them,” Signorin said. “For some reason they’re always better up there, so being able to battle and control the game and have opportunities to score, that was good.”

Landon Daniels gave WCHS the only goal it would need in the third minute off a penalty kick. The Lynx got the early opportunity after Clear Lake (1-3) was handed a yellow card on a tackle on Brandon Young in the box.

A free kick bomb from midfield by Connor Foster that got by the Lions’ goalkeeper in the 32nd minute pushed the cushion to 2-0.

Antonio Pinna was standing near the post on a throw-in when he was shoved in the back in the 37th minute. It led to another PK; Pinna took this one and slammed it in the back of the net.

WCHS remained in control throughout the second half and the defense took care of the few looks the Lions did have at goal. Ashton High collected three saves.

“I only had to yell once (at the defense), so that was good,” Signorin joked. “Ashton made one good save, but other than that he wasn’t really tested.

WCHS will look to make it six in a row on Monday when it heads back out on the road to face Garner-Hayfield/Ventura in Garner at 5:30 p.m.

Lynx JV wins

The WCHS junior varsity team also got by Clear Lake, 2-1, last night.

High and Miguel Herrera notched the goals; Carsen Johnson distributed an assist on High’s goal.
