Reiter, Peters champs; Hawks fourth with eight grapplers

MANLY – Charlie Reiter has got senioritis, and while that might be frowned upon in the classroom, on the wrestling mat it tends to lead to good things.

Knowing the days are numbered until the end of his mat career, the South Hamilton 138-pounder isn’t about to waste any opportunities, and he certainly proved that on Saturday at the Central Springs Round Robin Tournament.

Reiter mowed through the competition and racked up four falls and a decision win to dominate his bracket. He took care of Central Springs’ Geordan Perry, 4-1, in his final match to clinch the gold medal.

“He has something new about him this year,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said about Reiter. “I don’t what it is about seniors, but once they get to this season they seem to go about their business with so much more emphasis on doing things right and never giving up, and that was Charlie. He had a really nice tournament.”

Eighth-ranked 160-pounder Luke Peters joined Reiter atop the podium, and two other Hawks – 126-pounder Keaton Hetland and 152-pounder Brian Carroll – placed second to help the team place fourth with 142 points despite being open at six weights.

“It was a good day for the guys that we had in the lineup,” Brodie said. “You always wish you had more, but the effort level was outstanding.”

Peters, a returning state qualifier, strolled through the day with four wins by fall and one by injury default. He remains unbeaten on the season.

“(The opponents) were good bodies but, to be frank, Luke is a state caliber talent and that’s what we’re going to try to find him,” Brodie said. “He goes about his business with a whole new attitude this year. It’s really fun to watch him warm up and then take the mat.”

Carroll collected two wins by decision, one by major decision and one by fall. His bid for a title came up short against South Central Calhoun’s Brody Goodman.

“He looked good in every single match,” Brodie said of Carroll. I think, confidence wise, this will be a good thing for him.”

Hetland picked up bonus points in three of his four wins, including one fall. He fell short against the lanky Chance Throndson of Riceville, who won the division.

“That kid from Riceville was no slouch,” Brodie said. “He was a very tall wrestler and we had a hard time getting out from underneath. But (Hetland) will improve and get better against taller competition.”

Other place winners for South Hamilton included Brian Greenfield (third at 145), Noah Lutter (fifth at 170), Zach Larson (third at 195) and Rylan Harris (fourth at 220).

The Hawks will travel to Alleman on Thursday for a Heart of Iowa Conference triangular with North Polk and CMB.
