Mustang girls show no mercy, thump Hawks by 33

JEWELL – It’s right back to the drawing board for South Hamilton girls’ basketball coach Tony Woodall and his players.

Woodall knows some things have got to change, and in a hurry.

A lack of a scoring threat, coupled with myriad turnovers spelled disaster for the Hawks on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night, as they were left at the side of the road by a speeding Prairie City-Monroe club that put the game away in the first quarter.

Up 17 points after just 8 minutes, the Mustangs rolled to a 54-21 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

South Hamilton (0-2, 0-2 HOIC) turned the ball over 29 times – 22 of them came on steals, 11 by PCM forward Kayla Jennings – and shot a dismal 18 percent from the field (8 of 44).

Just how bad was it? Mustangs’ guard Katie VandeWall outscored South Hamilton by 13 points, 21-8, in the opening half. The Mustangs owned a commanding 27-point cushion (35-8) at the intermission.

“It’s still a learning process, but as a coach I need to start figuring things out in a hurry,” Woodall said. “I’m still looking for five or six or seven kids that we can get some consistency from and it’s hard. Nobody’s spot is safe right now.”

PCM (3-0, 2-0 HOIC) turned up the defensive pressure during the initial 16 minutes and made it hard for the Hawks to move the ball past mid-court. VandeWall took advantage and led all scorers despite not producing a point in the second half.

“I watched tape and they didn’t press the last team they played at all, so that was kind of a surprise,” Woodall said.

Bree Hodnefield led the Hawks with seven points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Spindler finished with five points and MaKayla Tapper came off the bench to produce four.

A 3-pointer from the right wing by Spindler with 5:45 left in the first quarter pulled the Hawks within a point, 4-3. PCM proceeded to score the next 13 points and closed the period on a 17-1 flurry.

An offensive rebound and put back by Spindler with 3:28 to go in the second quarter ended a field goal drought of 10:13.

In addition to her defensive prowess, Jennings pitched in 14 points for the Mustangs. Jayci Vos added six points and Bailey Bordersen registered five.

Anna Moss helped the Hawks’ cause with four rebounds and three steals. Marla Grubb also yanked down four boards.

South Hamilton will head to Ogden for a non-conference clash with the Bulldogs Saturday evening.
