Lynx put it all together at home invite, place second

WEBSTER CITY – Consistency and confidence did wonders for the Webster City volleyball team at its own Lynx Invitational on Saturday.

With both in their back pocket, the Lynx cruised to four wins and a runner-up finish in the six-team round-robin format.

WCHS (6-8) swept Southeast Valley (21-7, 21-10), Ogden (21-15, 21-18), North Central Conference rival Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (21-14, 21-19) and Clarke (21-15, 21-9).

Tournament champion Gilbert was the only team to get the better of the Lynx (21-17, 21-12).

It was a welcome sight for WCHS head coach Jess Howard, who had a week to prepare her players after a 1-5 showing at the Algona Invitational.

“The girls came out a lot more focused and for the most part they were consistent throughout the day and competed well,” Howard said. “(Consistency) and them believing in themselves were key. Their mentality is starting to change.”

The attackers produced an overall kill efficiency of .238, including .400 in the rout of Ogden.

Kenzie Garvey lashed a team-high 25 kills on the day. Andi Anderson turned in 18, while Taylor Schnathorst (16), Hannah Williams (12) and Olivia Myers (11) all reached double figures as well.

Garvey and Anderson combined for 18 kills against the Cowgirls. Garvey also smacked five in each the final two matches, while Williams opened the tournament with a team-best six against Southeast Valley.

“I thought we had a real balanced approach all day,” Howard said. “The setters did a good job of finding which girl was hot in each of the matches.”

Schnathorst distributed 55 assists. Courtney Lampman shared the setting duties and doled out 37.

Schnathorst (20) and Lampman (19) combined for 39 digs. Libero Gianna Gourley collected 50, and Garvey finished with 18.

WCHS rattled off 28 service aces, including eight each from Lampman and Schnathorst. Lampman made just one error in 41 serving opportunities.

The Lynx will get back to conference play on Tuesday with a road trip to take on Hampton-Dumont. Varsity play will get underway in Hampton at approximately 7:15 p.m.
