Harris Clash takes over speedway this evening

WEBSTER CITY – The prestigious Harris Clash is coming home to run once again at the Hamilton County Speedway.

Following a mid-July rainout, the Harris Clash was rescheduled for this evening on the track where it all started on Labor Day weekend in 1992.

The Clash is considered one of the premier Modified races in the county; the 2014 Clash held at Knoxville drew 81 Modified and 59 Sport Mod drivers from 11 states and Canada.

Race fans will see numerous heat races and B-features as the drivers attempt to qualify for the main feature. The Modified winner will take home a $2,000 prize, while $1,000 will go to the Sport Mod victor.

Drivers receive state, regional and national IMCA points for their participation.

The Daily Freeman-Journal reported in the Sept. 9, 1992 sports page that Kelly Shryock, the 1992 track champion, topped the first Harris Race of Champions after he drew the No. 1 starting spot. In second was Webster City driver R.D. Flaws.

Shryock considered the Hamilton County Speedway his home track in the early days of his racing career and has been a longtime fan favorite. He is pre-entered in tonight’s event.

In 1993, the historic half-mile again hosted the Harris Clash as part of the Labor Day weekend special to end the season with a total purse of $550 on the line. Drivers were allowed a mid-race break during the 20-lap feature.

Taking home the honors in 1993 was Hamilton County Speedway champ Denny Hovinga. Todd Cooney was the runner-up.

The grandstand admission for tonight’s special event will be $15 for adults, $8 for students and $4 for kids between the ages of 6 and 12. Kids 5 and under will be admitted for free.

Pit passes will run $30.

The pit gates will open at 3 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with racing to follow.
